I think I can honestly say thanks, summer,it was awesome. I’m done. 90+ degrees on the bank sign outside my Bellevue office and it’s only June 3rd. Summer makes me grateful for many things like box fans, gelato, homemade blueberry-mango granitas, cold beer, cool sheets at night, water fountains, sailing, you get the picture. I’m definitely NOT a hot-weather lover. My favorite season is fall, with rain and thunderstorms, cool breezes and beautiful sunflowers in bloom, leaves turning color as the days pass. This is followed closely by winter and spring. Summer has always been, to me, a season of sticky, overheated car seats, sunburns, and cranky children.
But wait, there are still things to be excited about! Biking home in the twilight after a movie, even though it’s already 9 o’clock at night. Sailing in the morning or evening when the changing temperature creates exciting wind patterns (Duck Dodge- www.duckdodge.com- anyone?). And food. Glorious summer food. Ice-cold watermelons, cherries, corn on the cob hot off the grill, dripping with butter, and oh, my, Copper River salmon with wild onions. A taste for salads and cold sandwiches every day leads to a loosening of my waistband every year at this time. Gallons of iced tea, sweetened with local honey and garnished with homegrown mint.
That honey (if raw) and all those fruits and veggies can actually help your body minimize its response to seasonal allergies. Drinking lots of fluids to stay well-hydrated and eating that salmon will help keep the moisture in your body and your skin stay balanced. Add lots of oilve oil, other fresh seafood, and the beautiful array of fruits and vegetables at the local farmer’s market and you’ve got yourself a recipe for health that will keep you full for days..and give you plenty of energy to bike down to the lake for a quick sail, or to the library for a book to read while wasting the afternoon in the hammock.. Ah, summer, my favorite season.
